Colonic Irrigation FAQ'sFrequently Asked Questions about Colonic Irrigation/Hydrotherapy
What is colonic irrigation/hydrotherapy?
Colon Hydrotherapy / Irrigation, gently fills the colon with warm filtered water through a small rectal tube. Special massage techniques are then used to help to expel waste as the water is flushed out, carrying with it any material that has built up in the large intestine (colon) such as accumulated faecal matter, toxins, parasites, harmful bacteria and trapped gases.
What is a colon?
The colon, or large intestine, is the end portion of the human digestive tract (food carrying passageway extending from the mouth to the anus). The colon is approximately 5 feet long and 2 1/2 inches in diameter. Its major functions are to eliminate waste and to conserve water.
Why have a colonic?
Waste material, especially that which has remained in the colon for some time, (i.e. impacted faeces, dead cellular tissue, accumulated mucous, parasites, worms, etc.), poses several problems. This material is quite toxic (poisonous) and these poisons can re-enter and circulate in the blood stream making us feel ill, tired or weak. Also, a build-up of material on the colon wall can inhibit the colons’ muscular action which can cause sluggish bowel movements, constipation, and other related disorders.
What will happen at your appointment?
Your first appointment will include a consultation, medical questionnaire and a full explanation of the equipment and procedure.
Or therapists have a friendly, open-minded, listening approach that helps us consider some of the possible causes of your digestive problems, and suggest some positive changes you need to bring your lifestyle back into a natural balance with your body.
Following your consultation, the therapy itself takes around 45 minutes, during which modern, hygienic equipment gently cleanses your colon using warm filtered water, in a simple, dignified procedure.
Warm filtered water is introduced into your colon through a small tube called a speculum that is gently inserted about an inch and a half into your rectum. As the warm water enters, you’ll feel a fullness as your colon fills up, then a relaxing feeling as it empties. The water pressure and temperature are carefully controlled and all waste is drained away discreetly in a closed system with absolutely no mess or odours.
This filling and emptying is repeated several times and massage is applied to your abdomen. Unlike an enema, colonic hydrotherapy reaches the whole length of your large intestine, with the massage from your therapist helping to ensure you benefit from an effective cleanse. Your complete discretion is assured.
There’s no need to be concerned about the treatment as your therapist understands the sensitivity of the therapy and will work to preserve your dignity at all times. You’ll be given privacy to change and have access to private toilet facilities. You will only be exposed for a few seconds for the insertion of the speculum, and after that you’ll remain covered throughout the treatment.
Our therapists appreciate that you’ll feel a little embarrassed by such a personal procedure and they’ll do all they can to put you at your ease. They can also advise you on a healthy diet and lifestyle to support the colonic treatment and help you achieve better health and vitality.
What are healthy bowel movements?
Faeces should be medium to light brown in colour, have very little odour and should break up in water. Elimination should be quick and painless and you should be able to evacuate your bowels without straining. You should feel that the bowel has been emptied fully. A person could expect to have two to three bowel movements per day but this varies greatly from person to person.
Is there anything I need to do prior to treatment?
It is a good idea not to eat a heavy meal in the couple of hours prior to having a colonic treatment, but also don’t come on an empty stomach, just eat and drink lightly during the day for best results.
How many treatments will I need?
This can vary from person to person and will depend on your personal aims and your current state of health. Most people find that one treatment is a sufficient to cleanse their system and leave them feeling lighter and more energised. Impacted wastes that have built up over time may require more cleansing and may require a few treatments close together, followed by occasional maintenance treatments can help them achieve their aims. It is a good idea to come along and try one treatment and the therapist can advise as every client will be assessed as an individual case depending on their condition and needs.
Is it safe?
Yes, your safety is of paramount importance. The body detox clinic uses state of the art colonic machines ensuring the water is introduced at a low gentle pressure, so there is no danger of bowel perforation. There is less pressure against the bowel walls during a treatment than during a normal bowel movement. Disposable equipment (which is opened in front of each client) is used to make it a safe and hygienic treatment. Our therapists are fully trained and have extensive experience.
Is there any danger of transmitting disease through the equipment used in colonic irrigation?
No. All equipment used is disposable.
Is it possible to perforate the bowel through colonic irrigation?
No, due to the low pressures used and the extremely small device (speculum) introduced into the rectum.
Does it hurt?
Not usually, at the start of the procedure, you may experience strange sensation of wanting to go to the toilet, but most people get used to this feeling in the first few minutes. In the case of removing impacted faeces you may experience some cramping and slight discomfort, but as this impacted faeces is removed you will find the treatment more pleasant and may even find the colonic treatment unexpectedly relaxing.
Is it embarrassing?
No, you will fully maintain your personal dignity. You will be in a private room with only your therapist, who fully appreciates the sensitivity of the colonic procedure and will help you feel at ease. Your emotions will be acknowledged and honoured. You are given a full length disposable gown to wear and are completely covered with a blanket. Because it is a fully closed system there is no odour or sound other than the sound of the water. Toilet and washing facilities are in the connected room to the the colonic room and are for your exclusive use.
What are the contraindications to Colonic Irrigation?
There are a few contra-indications to keep in mind when considering colonic irrigation, including recent colon and abdominal surgeries, pregnancy, abdominal hernias, uncontrolled high blood pressure and people taking long term oral steroids. Our highly trained therapists thoroughly check the suitability of each individual prior to starting any treatment.
How long will the Treatment take?
Probably 90% of all colonics take about 35- 45 minutes. It could also be shorter or longer than that, based upon the judgement of the therapist and sometimes, the wishes of the client. There will also be about 15 minutes required before the colonic for the therapist to go over your medical history, another 15 minutes should be allowed for changing. On a first colonic you should expect to spend about 1 1/4 hours at the clinic.
Do you use a special type of water?
We use highly filtered water Which passes through a number of filters in the machine, and is warmed to a safe temperature.
Will this treatment effect the electrolyte balance in the body?
No, the amount of water used is monitored very carefully, the machines we use at the clinic have safety measures that will not allow unsafe amounts of water to be used.
In the 1989 study – “Effects of Colon Hydrotherapy on Serum Electrolytes” conducted by National College of Naturopathic Medicine, Portland, USA: “No patients experienced any clinically significant symptoms or disturbances”.
Will I lose Weight?
You may lose some weight; some clients have lost 1-2 lbs after a colonic. Most people say they feel a little lighter after a colonic. Just bear in mind that you lose wastes only, not fat or cellulite. If you start eating less, increase your fibre intake, move or exercise more, chew better and drink more water, then you will be more likely to achieve permanent weight loss.
How is Colon Hydrotherapy different from enemas?
An enema will only remove the waste from the sigmoid and rectal areas of the colon, which is about the last 1ft of the colon. Colon-hydrotherapy treatment can remove impacted material from the whole of the large bowel approx. 5 feet long.
Why not just use laxatives?
Laxatives empty the colon short term but do not always remove very impacted waste. Used regularly they can cause dehydration and make the bowel lazy. One of the tremendous benefits of colonic irrigation is that it actually hydrates the body. Additionally, colon hydrotherapy promotes peristalsis and helps the colon muscles regain tone therefore assisting the return of regular bowel movements.
How will I know when the bowel is empty?
As the bowel is an organ in continuous use it will probably never be completely empty. As
more of the old impacted material is released you will actually feel the water enter higher regions of the colon. The aim is not to achieve an empty colon, but rather a better functioning colon.
Can Colonic Irrigation become habit forming?
No, colonic irrigation is not habit forming. One of the benefits of colonic irrigation is the toning of the colon muscles, which helps in maintaining and resuming regular bowel movements.
Does colonic irrigation wash out the good bacteria from the large bowel?
Colonic irrigation does flush some good and bad bacteria out of the colon. However, the bad bacteria thrive in a toxic bowel whereas the good bacteria thrive in a clean healthy bowel, so following a colonic irrigation the good bacteria have a cleaner habitat facilitating their reproduction and multiplication, therefore achieving a positive bacterial balance.
Can I have a colonic during my monthly period?
Yes, it is perfectly safe to have colonic irrigation during this time.
How do toxins accumulate in the body?
Toxins can accumulate in the body as a result of stress and/or consuming too much acidic processed food, such as sugar, white flour, fizzy pop, caffeine and alcohol. When the bowel becomes unnaturally acidic, it protects itself by secreting a substance that lines the entire intestinal wall. This is known as mucoid plaque. Unfortunately, this substance also makes it hard for the body to absorb vitamins and nutrients. When the bowel becomes toxic, it contaminates the blood, which in turn, spreads the toxins to the heart, lungs, brain, muscles. The liver is then left to deal with toxic blood, and after years of relentless toxicity, it will become sluggish until it will no longer function effectively. Colonic irrigation allows you to remove accumulated mucoid plaque allowing your bowel and your liver to function more effectively.
What can I expect afterwards?
This can vary from person to person. Most likely, you’ll feel great. Probably you’ll feel lighter and enjoy a sense of well-being. However, it is a big detox and some people can feel a little tired, may feel light-headed or chilled for a few hours after the treatment. As soon as the colonic is finished you can carry on with daily routine. For some, the colonic may trigger several subsequent bowel movements for the next few hours, but there won’t be any uncontrollable urgency or discomfort. It’s also possible you
Do I need to take probiotics following the treatment?
Your body will replace the friendly bacteria within 48hrs. The practitioner will sometimes recommend the taking of probiotic cultures and a diet which will encourage the friendly bacteria to multiply depending on individual needs.
What diet should I follow after a Colonic Irrigation treatment?
